Forest Defenders vindicated by United Nations body

26th June 2007

The Huon Valley Environment Centre has welcomed today's resolution by the World Heritage Committee of UNESCO which backs long-standing concerns about logging adjacent to the boundary of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA).

“Today’s decision backs the non-violent protests in the Weld Valley that have acted to defend these ancient forests which are of global significance,” said Jenny Weber, spokesperson for the Huon Valley Environment Centre.

"The Huon Valley Evironment Centre's efforts have been recognised for their work in preparing reports and providing information to World Heritage organisations, specifically highlighting damaging logging in the Lower Weld Valley."

"This strong resolution flies in the face of Forestry Tasmania, the Lennon Government and the Howard Government's pitiful approach to the management of the TWWHA and the pristine forest which surround it," said Ms Weber

"Not only is the integrity of the TWWHA being degraded by the logging, but pristine old growth forests of the lower Weld Valley directly adjoining the national park, are being decimated," said Ms Weber.
